Gun Violence Prevention Groups Statement on the Need to Expand and Rebalance the Supreme Court

Washington -- A coalition of gun violence prevention groups, along with Stand Up America, released the following statement on the need to restore balance to the Supreme Court after the Court heard a case today that could undermine gun safety laws across the country, even while 2021 is on track to become the deadliest year for gun violence in decades, with more than 600 mass shootings and more than 37,600 Americans already killed.

“The Supreme Court has long respected the ability of states and local jurisdictions to enact laws that promote public safety and keep their citizens safe. But this Supreme Court’s extreme right-wing supermajority has indicated that they’re willing to trample on longstanding history and precedent in order to put pro-gun interests before people, making all of us less safe. Congress must pass the Judiciary Act to restore balance to a Supreme Court that has become too biased in favor of the pro-gun lobby.”

The Judiciary Act of 2021 would expand the United States Supreme Court by adding four seats, creating a 13-justice Supreme Court, restoring balance to the nation’s highest court and allowing the court to fulfill its duty to deliver equal justice under the law and protect the rights and well-being of millions of Americans.
