Newtown Action Alliance Outraged by Supreme Court’s Dangerous Extremist Opinion

Urges Congress to Pass Strong Federal Gun Laws, Judiciary Act to Expand the Court, and Judicial Ethics and Anti-Corruption Bill

Washington -- Po Murray, Chairwoman of Newtown Action Alliance released the following statement in response to the 6-3 Supreme Court decision in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen, which struck down key safety protections in the New York State’s concealed-carry permitting law.

“Today, we are outraged that the Supreme Court undermined gun safety laws across the country, even while 2022 is on track to become the deadliest year for gun violence in decades. Six unelected justices sent a message that protecting Americans from gun violence is less important than protecting people carrying loaded weapons in public.

The Supreme Court has long respected the ability of states and local jurisdictions to enact laws that promote public safety and keep their citizens safe. But this Supreme Court’s extreme right-wing supermajority has indicated that they’re willing to trample on longstanding history and precedent in order to put pro-gun interests before people, making all of us less safe.

To counter the SCOTUS assault on public safety, we urge Congress to pass:

  • a set of strong lifesaving federal gun legislation including S.4263 - Federal Firearm Licensing Act; H.R.8 - Bipartisan Background Checks Act; H.R.1446 - Enhanced Background Checks Act; the omnibus package H.R.7910 - Protecting Our Kids Act which includes raising the age to purchase assault weapons to age 21, limit high capacity magazines, federal criminal offense for gun trafficking, bans ghost guns and bump stocks, and Ethan's Law to #KeepKidsSafe from unsecured guns; H.R.2377 - Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act; S736 / H.R.1808 - Assault Weapons Ban of 2021, S.1338 / H.R.2814 Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act to remove the gun industry's legal shield; and S.2275 / H.R.4118 - Break the Cycle of Violence Act to fund community violence intervention programs.

  • the Judiciary Act of 2021 to expand the Unites States Supreme Court by adding four seats to restore balance to a Supreme Court that has become too biased in favor of the pro-gun lobby.

  • the Judicial Ethics and Anti-Corruption Act of 2022 to demand that the justices follow a Code of Ethics for the first time in history. For too long, corruption and conflicts of interest have threatened the Court’s ability to act fairly and justly.”
