Background/History
An AR-15 and high capacity magazines were used by a gunman to murder 20 children and six educators in less than five minutes at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012.
AR-15s and other assault weapons are banned in California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Washington, D.C. therefore they are legal in 43 states. High-capacity magazines or large-capacity magazines are banned in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont therefore they are legal in 41 states.
President Bill Clinton signed the Assault Weapons Ban into law on September 13, 1994 but the law expired on September 13, 2004 under President George W. Bush. In the decade after the ban expired, there was 347% increase in fatalities from mass shootings.
FEDERAL LEGISLATION
Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA) introduced S.736 and Representative David Cicilline (D-RI) introduced H.R.1808 to restrict civilian access to assault weapons. We have worked closely with Brady United and March for Our Lives to seek cosponsors for these life-saving bills.
Find out all you need to know about the assault weapons ban legislation HERE.
