It is time to unite together to put pressure on Congress to stop ignoring this public health crisis and hold Congress accountable for not taking action in passing common sense gun safety laws.

We marched for our right to live without fear of gun violence in our daily lives. We marched because too many of us know firsthand that guns don't make us safer. 

Today, as Donald Trump signs his Executive Orders that take away women's rights and damage our environment, we are asking you get to know your three Members of Congress (MoCs) and send them a "HEAR OUR VOICE" postcard!

Former congressional staffers who witnessed the rise of the Tea Party created the INDIVISIBLE GUIDE to help activists fight for our issue (s) during Trump's Presidency. We will share these strategies with you to promote our efforts to #EndGunViolence. 

We ask you to put pressure on your three Members of Congress (MoCs) — your House Representative and two Senators. Even MoCs who support your issue (s) need to hear from you so that they can adequately represent you.   

1. "Begin with these five steps to gather intel. Before anything else, take the following five steps to arm yourself with information necessary for all future advocacy activities.

1. Find your three MoCs, their official websites, and their office contact info at www.callmycongress.com. 
    
2. Sign up on your MoCs’ website to receive regular email updates, invites to local events, and propaganda to understand what they’re saying. Every MoC has an e-newsletter.
    
3. Find out where your MoCs stands on the issues of the day — appointment of white supremacists, tax cuts for the rich, etc. Review their voting history at VoteSmart.org.Research their biggest campaign contributors at OpenSecrets.org. 
    
4. Set up a Google News Alert (http://www.google.com/alerts) — for example for “Rep. Bob Smith” — to receive an email whenever your MoC is in the news.
    
5. Research on Google News (https://news.google.com/news) what local reporters have written about your MoCs. Find and follow them on Twitter, and build relationships. Before you attend or plan an event, reach out and explain why your group is protesting and provide them background materials and a quote. Journalists on deadline — even those who might not agree with you — appreciate when you provide easy material for a story"

2. Participate in Women's March on Washington's 10 Actions in 100 Days FIRST ACTION by sending "HEAR OUR VOICE" postcards to your three Members of Congress.

Dear Senator or Representative _______:

December 14, 2016 is the four-year anniversary date of the devastating Sandy Hook shootings. We continue to mourn the senseless loss of 20 innocent children and their educators on December 14, 2012. We also mourn the loss of 120,000 other Americans who have been killed with guns since that tragic day.

The brutal shootings of 20 children and six educators should have been enough for Congress to take swift action to reduce gun violence. It is tragic and shameful that the House of Representatives has not yet voted on a gun violence prevention (GVP) bill and the Senate has rejected the GVP bills three times in the last four years. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Pat Toomey’s (R-PA) bipartisan Senate Amendment 715 to S.649 to require background checks on gun sales, was defeated 54-46 on April 17, 2013 after the Sandy Hook shooting and defeated once again by 50-48 margin on December 3, 2015, the day after the San Bernardino shooting. Senator Chris Murphy’s (D-CT) Amendment 4750 to H.R.2578 to require background checks on sale of all guns, was also defeated 55-44 on June 20, 2016 after the senseless Orlando Pulse Night Club shooting.

Annually, over 33,000 Americans die from gunshots and another 80,000 American are getting injured by gunshots. Congress has shamefully done nothing to close the dangerous loopholes in our nation’s gun laws to keep Americans safe from gun violence.

We are a coalition of families of victims, survivors, and gun violence prevention groups from across this great nation representing over 22 million supporters from every state and we are collectively imploring you to support the following bills to end gun violence in our nation:

CLOSE THE LOOPHOLES & EXPAND BACKGROUND CHECKS TO THE SALE OF ALL GUNS:

Senate: Re-introduce, vote on, and support Senator Chris Murphy’s (D-CT) Senate Amendment 4750 to H.R.2578, which is the text language from Senator Charles Schumer’s bill, S.2934, “to ensure that all individuals who should be prohibited from buying a firearm are listed in the national instant criminal background check system and require a background check for every firearm sale”.

House: Cosponsor, vote on, and support companion language such as Rep. Jackie Speier’s (D-CA 14th District) Bill from the 114th Congress: H.R. 3411: the Fix Gun Checks Act of 2015.

According to Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, “Background checks keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people like felons, domestic abusers, and the severely mentally ill. According to FBI data, the Brady Law has blocked more than 3.0 million gun sales to prohibited people since it went into effect in 1994.”

Numerous polls consistently demonstrate that more than 90% of Americans support universal background checks.

BAN ASSAULT RIFLES AND HIGH CAPACITY MAGAZINES:

Senate: Introduce, vote on, and support a Senate companion to Representative David Ciciline’s (D-RI 1st District) bill H.R. 4269 to ban assault weapons and limit high capacity magazines.

House: Cosponsor, vote on, and support reintroduction of Representative David Cicilline bill H.R. 4269 to ban assault weapons and limit high capacity magazines.

REPEAL THE 2005 PROTECTION OF LAWFUL COMMERCE IN ARMS ACT (PLCAA):

Senate: Cosponsor, vote on, and support reintroduction of legislation like Senators Richard Blumenthal’s (D-CT) bill in the 114th Congress, S. 2469 - A bill to repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act to eliminate the special legal protection that shields the firearms manufacturers and dealers from being held liable when crimes have been committed with their products. For the last decade, PLCAA has provided the corporate gun industry special legal protection that is not enjoyed by any other industry in America.

House: Cosponsor, vote on, and support reintroduction of companion legislation by Rep. Adam Schiff, [D-CA-28] of H.R.4399 - Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act.

ALLOW THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION (CDC), AS WELL AS OTHER FEDERAL AGENCIES, TO AGGRESSIVELY CONDUCT RESEARCH ON GUN VIOLENCEPREVENTION:

Dedicate funding for the CDC to support gun violence prevention research and begin to reverse the chilling effect caused by the Appropriations amendment first authored by Rep. Jay Dickey (R-AR) in 1996, also referred to as the Dickey Rider, which continues to practically limit the CDC and other federal agencies from directing public funding toward reducing gun injuries and deaths in America in any significant way equal to the challenge by taking a public health approach to studying it.

What:  By December 2015, the 2nd anniversary of the Newtown shootings, more than 90,000 Americans nationwide will have died from gunshot wounds. We must continue to shine a light on the epidemic of gun violence in our nation until these gun deaths are reduced. The Newtown Foundation in partnership with the Saint Mark's Episcopal Church will host a 3rd annual national vigil service of mourning and loving remembrance for all who have fallen victim to the ongoing epidemic of gun violence in America on December 11th in Washington D.C. -near the 3rd anniversary date of the Sandy Hook tragedy.  Please join families of victims of gun violence and special guests in honoring all Americans affected by gun violence.

Nine Month Sandy Hook Anniversary Trip to Washington D.C.

Join Us In Washington, D.C.!

September 14th marks the nine month anniversary of the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. According to Slate’s estimate as of August 30, 2013, ~ 7,653 Americans have been killed by guns since Newtown (excluding suicides).  The casualties of gun violence grow each and every day and there has been no federal action taken by congress to pass what the majority of Americans support – universal background checks to save lives and make our communities safer.

In honor of the 26 lives lost on December 14, 2012 and the lives of 7,653 killed by guns since that day, the Newtown Action Alliance is traveling to Washington D.C. with gun violence survivors and victims from Chicago, Aurora, Oak Creek, Hartford come to DC to be heard on September 17th and 18th to participate in the following activities:

Throughout the two days, we will pound the pavement to visit every congressional office buildings in D.C. to hand-deliver letters to congress demanding background checks and a list of gun violence victims since Newtown.  The background check letter has been signed by over 100 gun violence prevention alliance partners across the country with gun violence prevention organizations from over 25 states.

Letter to the Editor Writing Frenzy

Bring a laptop or tablet and help us write letters to local papers around the country. Please spread the word!

If you cannot attend live, please consider writing a letter to the editor of your local paper (generally 200 words or less) and forward it to Gina McDade for replication and reposting on our website.

JULY 14TH “Ride to Remember”.

On the 7-month anniversary of the Sandy Hook tragedy, The Ridgefield Bicycle Company (new location at 88 Danbury Road) is organizing a 40-50 mile bike ride to Newtown and back.  Open to the public.  Ride starts at approx 7am and riders should be back by approx 10am.  There will be an after-party at 10am at The Ridgefield Bicycle Company for riders and friends.

It has been six months since the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Since then, thousands of Americans have died from gun violence, the casualties grow every day, and there has been no action from Congress to pass what the majority of Americans support – universal background checks to save lives and make our communities safer.

In honor of the 26 lives lost on December 14, 2012, and the more than 4,500 lives lost since that day, Newtown Action Alliance is planning a series of events on Thursday, June 13 as follows:

• Post & Tweet In Unison Thunderclap Crowd Sourcing Event: At 9 a.m. a coordinated Twitter/Facebook message will launch simultaneously on all participant pages/feeds. Use the Twitter hashtag: #SixMonthsNoAction
• Speak Directly To Congress Throughout the day, a Newtown Action Alliance contingency will hand-deliver to members of Congress a list of gun violence victims and a letter signed by gun violence prevention alliance partners across the country demanding universal background checks.  To have your organization sign onto these letters sign up here
• Remember The Victims Starting at 9 a.m., there will be a “No More Names” (www.nomorenames.org) reading of all the victims lost to gun violence since 12/14. At noon, people from Newtown will read the 26 names of the children and educators lost that day.
• Human Green Ribbon of Remembrance After the 26 names are read, all of us, wearing green, will assemble to create a powerful visual and symbolic image. Together we will stand for a moment of silence to honor all victims lost to gun violence before, since and on 12/14.

WHAT: A press conference and public demonstrations to mark the six-month anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and to demand congressional action on gun reform.

WHO: Speakers at the press conference will include: • Jillian Soto, sister of Victoria Soto, who hid her students and then was shot and killed confronting the gunman in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown • Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) • House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) • Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) • Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) • Rep. Elizabeth Esty (D-CT) • Rep. Peter King (R-NY) • Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA)

WHEN: Thursday, June 13, 2013 • 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Name-reading vigil observing the lives lost since the Newtown shooting (Outside the US Capitol Building, Zone 1) • 12:00 p.m. – 12:30 p.m.: Press conference with key lawmakers (Capitol Visitor Center - SVC 201) • 12:30 p.m. -1:00 p.m.: Formation of the “Ribbon of Remembrance” • 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.: Resume name-reading vigil observing the lives lost since the Newtown shooting
