Newtown Action Alliance Statement on the Deadly Mass Shooting Incident in Boulder, Colorado
Urges President Biden to Champion the Efforts to Pass Life-Saving Gun Bills
Newtown, CT - Po Murray, the Chairwoman of Newtown Action Alliance, released the following statement in response to the deadly mass shooting incident in Boulder, Colorado.
“Six days after a 21-year-old gunman killed eight people including six Asian Americans in Atlanta, another 21-year-old gunman used an assault weapon to kill 10 people including a police officer at the Boulder King Soopers supermarket. Our hearts are breaking for the families of Denny Strong, Neven Stanisic, Rikki Olds, Tralona Bartkowiak, Suzanne Fountain, Teri Leiker, Eric Talley, Kevin Mahoney, Lynn Murray, Jody Waters; the first responders; and the entire community of Boulder. Over eight years ago, Newtown endured a similar day of terror.
“In the eight years since the Sandy Hook mass shooting incident, we have warned all Americans that if a mass shooting can happen in Sandy Hook, it can happen anywhere in the United States. We have implored multiple Presidents, hundreds of members of Congress, governors and state representatives to strengthen state and federal gun laws to end all forms of gun violence in America. Passing a comprehensive set of gun control laws outlined in GVPedia’s Denver Accord will keep our families and communities safe. Many states are working to strengthen their gun laws, but many are working to loosen them. Therefore, federal action is essential.
“Today, President Joe Biden called for Congress to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines and pass the two background check bills that were passed out of the House of Representatives ten days ago. We implore President Biden to champion the effort to bring these bills and other necessary life-saving gun bills to the finish line by first pushing for the elimination of the Senate filibuster. Senate Republicans should not be able to permanently block up-or-down votes on gun bills that have significant public support.
“Last November, we elected a Democratic majority in the House, the Senate and the White House with an expectation that they will pass legislation to save lives.”
