Newtown Action Alliance Applauds SCOTUS Ruling on Ghost Guns
Newtown, CT — Po Murray, Chairwoman of Newtown Action Alliance, released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court ruling in Bondi v. Vanderstok.
“Today’s 7-2 Supreme Court ruling in Bondi v. Vanderstok is a landmark victory for public safety and a powerful blow to the gun industry’s reckless campaign to flood our communities with untraceable weapons. By upholding the ATF’s ghost gun rule, the Court has confirmed what law enforcement, survivors, and advocates have long known: these weapons are firearms and must be treated as such under the law.
Ghost guns—unserialized, untraceable, and often sold in build-it-yourself kits—have fueled a deadly surge in gun violence nationwide. They are easily assembled without background checks, making them the weapon of choice for individuals who cannot legally buy a gun. Tragically, these weapons have already taken lives in schools, homes, and neighborhoods across the country.
In 2021, President Joe Biden signed an executive order to direct his Attorney General to regulate ghost guns. The ATF’s rule, finalized in 2022, closed a dangerous loophole by clarifying that ghost gun kits and key parts are subject to the same regulations as traditional firearms. This decision ensures that those protections will remain in place—and it’s already making a difference.
We applaud the Court for siding with public safety over industry profits and extremist ideology. We also recognize the broader context: this decision comes as certain political figures and groups continue to threaten life-saving gun policies. We must remain vigilant. The Supreme Court has done its part today—but it’s up to all of us to keep pushing for stronger laws, smarter enforcement, and lasting change.
For years, Newtown Action Alliance has sounded the alarm about ghost guns — through our advocacy, community outreach, and public education campaigns. On our website, we’ve highlighted the growing threat of 3D-printed and do-it-yourself weapons, warned Americans about the rise in crime linked to untraceable guns, and called for urgent federal action. Today’s decision validates everything we’ve fought for: accountability, safety, and the protection of our communities.”
