OPEN LETTER TO U.S. SENATE

200 FAMILIES AND SURVIVORS DIRECTLY IMPACTED BY GUN VIOLENCE FROM 38 STATES URGE THE U.S. SENATE TO VOTE NO ON JUDGE BRETT KAVANAUGH’S CONFIRMATION FOR U.S. SUPREME COURT

Dear Members of U.S. Senate:

We are families and survivors who have been directly impacted by gun violence from cities and towns across this nation. Some of us have been shattered by our loved ones being taken by senseless gun violence and some of us live our daily lives with physical and/or mental scars from gun violence.

We are united in support for common sense gun violence prevention measures to end gun violence in America and we are writing to implore you to vote NO to Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court of the United States of America.

The majority of Americans support common sense gun laws. 97% of Americans stand with us in support of background checks on all gun sales and 67% support a ban on assault weapons. Judge Kavanaugh does not share the same views as the majority of Americans. His record indicates that he has perverted the interpretation of the Second Amendment to promote the gun lobby’s agenda over public safety. We were not surprised when the National Rifle Association launched its seven-figure national and regional ad campaign to get him confirmed.

In the 2011 challenge to Washington D.C.’s Assault Weapons Ban, Judge Kavanaugh split from all others in the D.C. Circuit Court by arguing that it is unconstitutional to ban assault weapons. We believe his dissenting opinion is a radical interpretation of the 2008 District of Columbia v. Heller case. The 2008 Supreme Court ruling, authored by conservative Justice Antonin Scalia, argued that the Second Amendment right is “not unlimited” and that there is no “right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose.” Therefore, “dangerous and unusual” weapons can be banned under the Second Amendment.

We know firsthand that assault weapons are extremely dangerous and belong in the hands of our military personnel, not civilians! The autopsy records of our loved ones and the scars from our wounds should be enough evidence for you to vote NO to a Supreme Court nominee who believes these weapons of war should be readily available to all civilians.

Judge Kavanaugh is the most extreme Second Amendment Supreme Court nominee in modern history. If Judge Kavanaugh is confirmed, it would make it nearly impossible for Congress and state legislatures to pass common sense gun laws that the courts won’t overturn. Your support for Judge Kavanaugh will jeopardize the gun safety laws that are in place to protect Americans. Gun deaths and injuries will escalate more rapidly in America and all parents will fear sending their children out into the streets, schools, movies, malls, concerts, places of worship and other public places.

We beg you to vote NO on Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Sincerely,

Over 200 families and survivors directly impacted by gun violence from 38 states in United States of America:
