Newtown Action Alliance and States United to Prevent Gun Violence Endorse Elizabeth Esty for Re-election as the Representative in Congress from Connecticut’s Fifth Congressional District
Newtown, CT-Newtown Action Alliance and States United to Prevent Gun Violence proudly endorse Elizabeth Esty for re-election as the Representative in Congress from Connecticut’s Fifth Congressional District.
The Town of Newtown and the Fifth Congressional District have been blessed to have Elizabeth Esty as their Representative. She had not taken her seat in Congress and was waiting to be sworn in when 20 children and six educators were senselessly gunned down at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. Since then, she has shed tears with the Newtown community, hugged the families of victims and survivors and led the fight for common sense gun reform.
Although a freshman, Representative Esty immediately became a leader in the too-difficult fight to protect Americans from senseless gun violence. In her words, “Congress owes … every loved one of the more than 30,000 Americans who lose their lives to gun violence each year—the courage to move forward on commonsense measures to reduce gun violence. And while pundits on TV and special interest groups continue to use scare tactics to silence the will of the vast majority of the American people, we will not give up.”
Representative Esty serves as Vice Chair of the U.S. House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and she is a strong advocate for common sense reforms that will reduce gun violence to make our communities safer, while respecting Second Amendment rights. She has led a successful bipartisan effort in the U.S. House of Representatives to improve the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). She has co-sponsored the Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act, the Gun Show Loophole Closing Act, and the Assault Weapons Ban of 2015. After the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting, she joined Representative John Lewis and other gun sense champions to sit-in on the House floor to demand a vote to expand the federal background checks. The House of Representatives has shamefully failed to vote on a single gun violence prevention measure since the Sandy Hook shooting.
Representative Esty is a compassionate leader who stood by the Newtown community during the darkest days in Newtown history. The Newtown community, the State of Connecticut and the nation need Elizabeth Esty on Capitol Hill to continue to go toe-to-toe with the corporate gun lobby to end the tragic toll of gun violence.
