Newtown Action Alliance and States United to Prevent Gun Violence Action Fund Endorse Richard Blumenthal for Re-election as Connecticut’s Senior Senator for the 115th U.S. Congress
Newtown, CT – Newtown Action Alliance and States United to Prevent Gun Violence Action Fund proudly endorse Richard Blumenthal for re-election as Connecticut’s senior Senator for the 115th U.S. Congress.
On his website, Senator Blumenthal states, “The day of the Sandy Hook shooting was the most heartbreaking day of all my years in public service. I am fully committed to seeing common sense legislation to reduce gun violence signed into law”.
Connecticut and Newtown are fortunate to have Senator Blumenthal representing us in the U.S. Senate. He has stood with the Newtown families and the community since December 14, 2012 when a disturbed young man senselessly gunned down 20 children and six educators in an elementary school with weapons of war. As a father of four, Senator Blumenthal understands firsthand that there is more that can and should be done to protect our children from gun violence in our nation.
Together with Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT), Senator Blumenthal has relentlessly pushed the Senate to do its job to protect its citizens from gun violence. After the Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooting where 49 people were killed and 53 were injured by a gunman with a military-style assault weapon, he joined Senator Murphy and Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), in a 15-hour filibuster in an effort to call for immediate action on effective background checks and legislation to keep guns out of the hands of known or suspected terrorists.
While many in the Senate cave into the pressure from the corporate gun lobby, Senator Blumenthal has relentlessly stood up to the gun lobby by pushing the Senate to pass common sense gun safety measures. He has pushed for legislation that would keep military-style assault weapons and high capacity magazines out of civilian hands. He introduced the Lori Jackson Domestic Violence Survivor Protection Act, which “would restrict those under temporary restraining order from purchasing or possessing a firearm, and would extend the protections granted domestic violence victims to victims abused by their dating partners”.
He has pushed the Senate leadership to fund gun violence research by removing the ridiculous anti-gun safety riders from the appropriations legislation to end the ban on gun violence research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Senator Blumenthal also introduced a bill called “the Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act – to ensure that the victims of gun violence are allowed to have their day in court and that the gun industry – manufacturers, sellers and interest groups – is not shielded from liability when it acts with negligence and disregard for public safety. The bill would repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA)”.
Senator Blumenthal is an intelligent, compassionate, reliable and a steady leader who stood by the Newtown community during the darkest days in Newtown history. The Newtown community, the State of Connecticut and the nation need Richard Blumenthal on Capitol Hill to continue to go toe-to-toe with the corporate gun lobby to end the tragic toll of gun violence.
