Newtown Action Alliance Endorses Nancy Pelosi for Speaker of the House

Newtown, CT-The Newtown Action Alliance, a Newtown-based all-volunteer national grassroots gun violence prevention organization formed after the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, endorses Nancy Pelosi for Speaker of the House of Representatives for the116th Congress.

Po Murray, the Chairwoman of the Newtown Action Alliance stated: “After the midterms, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has affirmed that common sense gun control will be a priority for the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives of the 116th Congress. She has been a steady leader pushing for gun violence prevention measures.

“Since the Sandy Hook shooting tragedy, Leader Pelosi has 1) supported the families and survivors who have been directly impacted by gun violence in America; 2) consistently pushed the Republican Speakers John Boehner and Paul Ryan to allow a vote on multiple gun control measures in the House of Representatives of the 113th, 114th and 115th Congresses; 3) co-sponsored multiple bills to strengthen background checks for gun purchases, a ban on military-style semiautomatic assault weapons and high capacity magazines and other gun control measures; and 4) worked tirelessly to elect and re-elect House of Representative candidates and incumbents who reject NRA money and support.

“Speaker Ryan has shamefully stood with the NRA and refused to allow a vote on over 55 gun control measures introduced in the 115th House of Representatives after 300 mass shooting incidents and 100,000 gun deaths and injuries every year.

“On Election Day, 187 House of Representatives incumbents and candidates endorsed by the Newtown Action Alliance for supporting an assault weapons ban were elected. Voters across the nation support a comprehensive legislative approach to ending gun violence in America and no one in the House of Representatives is better equipped than Leader Pelosi to break the cycle of inaction on gun violence prevention on Capitol Hill. With Representatives Steny Hoyer and Jim Clyburn on her leadership team, Leader Pelosi will finally be able to force a vote on a comprehensive set of life-saving gun control policies in the House of Representatives. Her leadership will also be needed to push the Senate and the President to take action to save the lives of our loved ones in cities and towns across America.”
